Always Belt Up
Always Belt Up

The ‘Some belts are not optional’ campaign is designed to inspire young people to consistently wear seatbelts, whether they’re behind the wheel or a passenger. Regardless of circumstance or situation, every individual who wears a seatbelt correctly helps protects themselves in a crash while also setting a powerful example for their peers to follow.

The creative direction for the campaign, the selected Re:act 2025 University campaign in WA, was inspired by the strong influence fashion trends have on young people. With this in mind, we drew a connection between the current popularity of low-waisted jeans and the use of belts, merging this aesthetic with the message that wearing a seatbelt should never be a choice – it should be a habit.

ABOUT THE CAMPAIGN

TAKING ACTION

From a survey we conducted for Re:act among 17-25 year olds, we were surprised to discover that almost one-fifth (18.2%) of young people believe not wearing a seatbelt can still be safe.

This finding highlights a significant gap in education and awareness surrounding the contribution of seatbelts to road safety. It reveals that nearly one in five young people may be putting themselves at serious risk by not understanding the life-saving importance of seatbelt use.

ABOUT US

As someone who has had their licence for about 6 years and regularly driven to Bunbury, I have always been aware of road safety and the importance of wearing seatbelts, although there has been times with friends when the safety rules become a little blurred. This is why I enjoyed the Re:act program. It gave me a realisation that those small moments can be when incidents occur. As a part creator of this campaign, I found the Re:act experience extremely insightful.

Throughout the last 6 years of having my licence, I have always been conscious of my need, and my passengers’ need, to wear seatbelts. Throughout the Re:act program, I found that I am part of the group most likely to not wear seatbelts – young men. So I really felt the need to design a campaign with our group that reflects what we would respond to in road safety messaging. Completing Re:act has made me more aware of the importance of seatbelt safety, and especially how important my passengers’ safety is to me.

The Re:act program has been an amazing learning experience in understanding an audience and working with a team. I learned so much through the design and review process about considering how our designs would work in real-life rather than just theoretically. It was also a privilege to work with such a fantastic group of people with their own unique skills and insights. Re:act has been an amazing experience that I was grateful to be a part of.

I got my licence as soon as I was able to and became a driver for friends & family and was constantly told about how to be safe, which has luckily become cemented in my life. The Re:act program has reinforced the need for road safety for me, especially regarding seatbelts. After seeing various statistics & hearing from peers about experiences they’ve had, I came to see how some people felt about wearing a seatbelt. This experience has motivated me to encourage seatbelt safety in all circles of my life, & I will continue to ‘always belt up’.

I got my driver’s licence when I was 17 years old. It is important to always be aware and be safe on the road. However, I realised not many people in my country know how important wearing a seatbelt is as a driver or passenger. Every time I am in a car, my parents will force my family to wear their seatbelts before driving. I believe the Re:act program is a informative program for anyone, as a driver or a passenger.
